Viscount Bolingbroke (1678-1751)
Bolingbroke was an English politician and philosopher. In the late 20th century, he was rediscovered by historians as a major influence on Voltaire and American thinkers, especially John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. His works were widely read in the American colonies and his writings laid some of the groundwork for democracy by outlining the need and mechanics of a systematic parliamentary opposition.
